AI CMOs are a scam
We built one in an afternoon to prove it.
Writer: Danny Gazit, Hype CEO
VCs are pouring millions into “AI CMOs” that anyone with an OpenRouter key + Claude Code and a free afternoon can build.
And while founders are paying $100/month for them like they’ve just hired a growth team, they’re driving zero revenue or new users.
What is an AI CMO?
There’s a new wave of “AI marketing tools” all over the timeline right now. You’ve all seen it.
AI CMOs. Growth agents. Autonomous marketing teams.
They all promise the same thing:
“Plug this in and your company will grow itself overnight”
No agency. No team. No overhead. You’re going to be that first one-person trillionaire business. It’s as easy as one click.
If this behaviour feels familiar or maybe too good to be true, it’s because it is.
Remember just a few months ago when everyone told you to copy some code and build that Polymarket trading bot to become a millionaire overnight trading the BTC 15min markets? How many of you are now millionaires? Remember when Instagram first launched and all your friends were having the best time ever and you weren’t? This is how social media and FOMO works.
From the outside it looks easy. The reality is just very different.
Unfortunately, most of these tools aren’t doing anything magical.
They’re actually doing three things:
Scanning your website, socials and the internet
Summarising what they see
Packaging it into something that looks intelligent
That’s it.
No follow on strategy, no prioritisation, and importantly no quality execution.
Just a slightly nicer way of telling you what you probably already suspected. Or what any decent marketer would have told you in 15 minutes.
The fact people are even doing this (and paying for it) I think says a lot about the state of the world and business right now, and just how lost a lot of founders are. The fact established VCs are funding this…well I mean the less said about that the better tbh.
When we first started Hype 9 years ago, marketing in crypto was basically an afterthought. Something teams did last minute, or didn’t take seriously at all.
Over time that changed. The bar went up, and marketing became a core part of how projects actually succeeded.
We’re at a similar inflection point again now with AI.
There’s a lot of noise. A lot of confusion. And a lot of people overestimating what these tools can actually do.
I see it as our responsibility at Hype to help push this in the right direction again.
Not by telling people to ignore AI in marketing, but by showing how it should actually be used.
A year ago we launched Hype AI with this exact idea in mind. If we didn’t figure it out first, how could we help others? Today we’ve figured it out. And we’re helping others.
So what do we do about it? How do we educate people en masse?
The Solution
We sat down as a team last week and asked ourselves the same thing. And we decided the best way was to just prove it by showing people...
So, we built our own AI CMO yesterday afternoon.
Same idea. Same inputs. Same outputs.
Put in a website, get a “growth report” back. All for free. And all built using the best models and the latest architecture available to builders in the market today.
And honestly? It’s… fine.
It picks up some real things. It misses a lot. It sounds smart enough to feel useful.
Which is exactly the point. Sort of like a horoscope, if you want to believe it you will, If you’re even slightly sceptical, you’ll see how generic most of it is.
Because this is where people are getting confused, mistaking diagnosis for execution. The tool tells you your messaging is weak or your positioning is unclear. Cool. Now what?
Maybe we add some marketing execution agents which will just take that feedback and rewrite you some new headlines. Cool, but 99% of the time it’s unfortunately still AI slop and won’t move the needle.
It doesn’t have context. It doesn’t have judgement. It hasn’t been trained well. And it doesn’t know what it doesn’t know.
What it’s missing is the difference between your public position and your actual position. Those are different things, and the gap between them is exactly where brands get built - the contrarian views you haven’t published, the relationships that determine where you actually have standing, the things you’re deliberately not saying. Without working through all this, your AI CMO will make you bang average and amplify your newfound average-ness.
The companies actually winning right now aren’t replacing marketing with a tool, they’re doing something much simpler.
They’re combining AI tooling with:
good operators
clear thinking
fast execution
AI is useful. Incredibly useful. It makes teams faster, it removes grunt work. It unlocks new workflows.
But it doesn’t replace:
taste
judgement
prioritisation
execution
That’s still human.
So yeah.
Sorry, but AI CMOs aren’t magic.
And if you treat them like a replacement for actual marketing, you’re going to be disappointed.
If you want to see what they actually do, try ours for free:

Run your site through it, then ask yourself:
“Now what?”
We’ve set aside time over the next couple weeks from our senior leadership team, to speak with founders who are trying to figure this out properly.
If you’re unsure what tools to use, what’s actually working, or what’s holding your growth back, we’ll tell you straight.
15 mins. Free. No pitch. Just answers.
Try the tool, and then book a call.
Remember, the best use of AI today is using it to amplify people who already know what they are doing. So stop fading the people.
